Ten aid workers held in Burma,
Ten aid workers including some United Nations staff have been
detained in western Burma following deadly communal unrest, the UN says.
IN a bulletin on the situation in violence-wracked Rakhine state, the
UN said on Friday that humanitarian staff had been held for
"questioning" - adding that Burma's government had failed to respond to
queries about those detained.
More than 80 people were killed in a
wave of communal violence between ethnic Buddhist Rakhine and Muslim
Rohingya which swept the state in June, forcing tens of thousands to
flee as homes were torched and communities ripped apart.

Sen. Collins: Republicans and Democrats can agree on Myanmar (Burma)
In Myanmar (Burma) the tide of democracy is growing. But Aung San Suu Kyi rightly cautions foreign investors that the country still has no ‘rule of law.’ The US must continue to support those working to further human rights and civil society while carefully watching Burma's generals.
Landing in Naw Pyi Daw, Myanmar's (Burma's) capital, last month, I realized that I had tumbled down the rabbit hole into an altered reality, but one that, unlike Alice’s, carried little wonder.

Among many burman and arakanese both inside
Much has been made of the recent sectarian unrest in western Burma and its ramifications for the country’s fragile reform process. It’s important to note that the violence and subsequent outpouring of anti-Rohingya anger is not a niche issue confined to a specific locale – instead it should be viewed as something more pervasive among many Burman and Arakanese, both inside Burma and abroad, that threatens to contaminate the wider discourse on how to move the country forward.

Myanmar pays price for lost generation of educated
YANGON, Myanmar (AP) — The dormitories are empty, the once charming bungalows of professors overgrown with vines and weeds. Only grass grows where the Student Union building stood before soldiers obliterated it with dynamite.
This is Yangon University, once one of Asia's finest and a poignant symbol of an education system crippled by Myanmar's half a century of military rule. Only graduate students are still allowed to study here. Fearful of student-led uprisings, the regime has periodically shut down this and other campuses and dispersed students to remote areas with few facilities.
